Gooey the duck reunited with owner

Published: August 25, 2005

Gooey the duck, whose Auburn, Wash., seizure by state wildlife officials ruffled feathers around the nation, has been returned to his owner.

An agreement reunited the duck and owner Diane Erdman, but she and the state Department of Fish and Wildlife have different ideas how the mallard will live out its days, the Seattle Times reported.

The case began Aug. 12 when the agency went to Erdman`s work, the Northwest Territorial Mint, saying it believed she was illegally holding wildlife in captivity.

Despite Erdman`s explanation she nursed Gooey back to health, a wildlife worker grabbed the duck — a scene caught on videotape — and left.

A wildlife official at the agency bowed to public opinion from ensuing publicity and returned Gooey — with stipulations.

The agreement calls for Gooey to have plenty of greens, no longer have his wings clipped and be returned to the wild.

Erdman pointed to that part of the accord she said means the duck can leave “if he chooses to,” the newspaper reported.
