Fire hero rescues 9

Published: August 22, 2005

ARMY sergeant Eddie Young was hailed a hero yesterday for rescuing nine people from a blazing row of thatched cottages.

Eddie, 35, trained to tackle fires during the firefighter strikes, saw the 1.30am blaze in the roofs as he drove his girlfriend home.

He kicked down doors in the village of Stanford in the Vale, Oxfordshire, carried a 93-year-old named Maud to safety, helped other old folk out and woke people to alert them.

Simon Gibbs, 37, said he deserved a medal. “He is a hero. He saved lives.”

Fire officer Bob Burrell said: “His actions were particularly heroic.”

Eddie, based in Abingdon, said: “I wouldn’t use the word hero. I was just concerned for people.”
