Man stuck in mud as tide comes in; rescued

Published: August 21, 2005

A routine day of fishing turned into a chilling experience for a fisherman Friday night on Bird Creek. The unidentified man became trapped in mud as the tide rushed in on the creek.

Witnesses say he was in the water for about two hours before he was freed from the mud at about nine Friday night.

Rescuers were able to free the man quickly, but if the water would have been higher it could have been a more difficult situation.

“He was stuck in the mud and the tide came in and he got a bit of hyperthermia where his legs weren’t quite functioning well enough to walk him out of the water,” said Anchorage Fire Department Battalion Chief Brian Keene .

“We just want to caution everyone to be careful be aware of your environment and watch the tides in this area of Bird Creek. The tides come in fast, so make sure you time your exit for when the tide comes in,” said Keene.

The man was transported to the hospital to be treated for hypothermia.
