Priceless police medal returned

Published: August 20, 2005

Michael Klepatz never gave up hope his father’s police medal would someday be found.

Yesterday, Klepatz was reunited with the piece of family history when the medal, stolen during a break-in, was returned by police.

The medal was among the loot recovered by police during a search of a home last month.

“I thought it was gone forever,” said an emotional Klepatz during a brief handover ceremony yesterday.

Ivan Klepatz, Michael’s father, was awarded the police Exemplary Service Medal for his role in stopping a Jan. 22, 1971, robbery.

“It’s the most valuable thing I own. It has no price tag. It can never be replaced,” said Klepatz. “I’d almost given up hope of seeing it again.”

In addition to the Exemplary Service Medals, Klepatz and partner Herb Stephen were among the first recipients of the Canadian Banks’ Law Enforcement gold medal.
