Dognapped puppy returned to Pines store

Published: August 18, 2005

A stolen Yorkshire terrier puppy is safely back at a Pembroke Pines pet store today.

The two men who walked into a Petland store Monday on University Drive sold the 8-week-old pup to another man for $700, according to Megan Diaz, a Petland employee.

The buyer thought the low price was suspicious, since purebred Yorkies often sell for more than $1,500.

”He knew something was up, and he brought the puppy into our store so we could scan him,” Diaz said.

Petland inserts microchips under each of its puppies’ skins so they can later be identified in case they are lost or stolen.

Sure enough, it was the dognapped puppy.

”We’re really happy because it’s a really cute puppy,” Diaz said. “We want him to have a good home.”

Police officers spoke with the man who returned the Yorkie and determined he had nothing to do with its removal from the store Monday, Diaz said.

Police have not yet found the two suspects, she said.

Diaz did not know whether the man would receive the $500 reward the store offered for the two-pound puppy’s safe return.
