Cargo ship sinks; all rescued

A cargo ship of east China’s Zhejiang Province sank Wednesday afternoon in the Bohai Bay, north China, and all the 19 crew members were rescued 20 minutes later.

A source with the North China Sea Salvage Bureau under the Ministry of Communications said that a strong wind measuring nine on the Beaufort Scale occurred on the Bohai Sea, making the Zhejiang cargo ship, carrying sand from the Ningbo Port to the Qinhuangdao Port, sink at 3:20 p.m..

The bureau received the SOS signal that a cargo ship was about to sink at 2 p.m. and mobilized two ships and a helicopter to save the cargo ship immediately.

All the crew members, who abandoned the ship when it was sinking were rescued at 3:42 p.m..

In another development, a cargo ship capsized early Wednesday in the Bohai Bay and all the 15 crew members were rescued about five hours later.

The source with the Hebei provincial marine search and rescue center said a strong wind measuring nine on the Beaufort Scale occurred on the Bohai Sea, making the “Zhuyang III” heading from Tianjin to Ningbo, carrying 4,000 tons of coal and 30 containers, capsize.

The center received the SOS signal and mobilized six ships and one helicopter to save the cargo ship at 8:10 a.m.
