Police rescue man from burning building

Published: August 17, 2005

A West Side man was recovering in an area hospital early today after four Chicago police officers rescued him from a burning building last night, police said.

The officers were the first at the scene of the fire in the 1200 block of North Karlov Avenue at 11:15 p.m. when residents outside said people were still in the building, said police spokeswoman Amina Greer.

The fire was on the second floor of the multi-unit apartment building. But Officers Michael DeMarco and Anthony Varchetto of the Grand Central District’s tactical unit, who saw the fire while on other police business, ran up to the third floor after residents said people were trapped there, DeMarco said.

Smoke from the fire made it difficult to see so the officers called out to anyone still in the building, DeMarco said. “The fire was going good and the smoke was pretty thick,” he said. “It was getting bad.”

Moments later, they were followed by officers Jason Santiago and Brian Sherman of Grand Central Area detective division and a building resident who said a man was inside a third floor apartment.

Inside the unit, they found the man lying unconscious on the the floor, DeMarco said. The five carried him outside where he was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Greer said. The condition of the man, believed to be in his 20s, wasn’t known, but DeMarco said he was expected to recover.

The four officers were treated for minor smoke inhalation at area hospitals and released, DeMarco said.

No other injuries were reported, Greer said.
