40th wedding anniversary chance for charity

Published: August 17, 2005

A COUPLE from Raymond’s Hill, near Axminster, celebrated their ruby wedding anniversary and raised £500 for a cancer charity in the process.

Brian and Madeline Wilkes hold a garden party each year for invited guests and raise money for a charity.

This year, they decided to hold a bigger party and chose the cancer charity FORCE to benefit from the money.

Madeline said: “Last year, Brian had a scare with cancer and he went to Wonford to have it treated, so we wanted to do something for a cancer charity.

“FORCE was suggested to us by people at the hospital.”

The event was attended by around 130 friends and family and was held at the end of July.

It was held in the couple’s garden and included a free bar, bouncy castle, barbecue and cold buffet.

One of the gifts was a pair of ruby red vases, which had been a ruby anniversary gift to Mrs Wilkes’ parents and inherited by her daughter.

Mrs Wilkes said the guests had enjoyed the party despite the torrential downpours during the day.

She said the guests included her bridesmaid and other people who had been at their wedding.

The key to their long marriage was sorting things out together.

She said: “Communication is the biggest thing, it is no good letting things slide.

“We always talk and spend enough time together and we even worked together for a while.”
