Emily Motz’ donated hair will someday be taller than she is. At age 14, she has already donated 30 inches of hair to Locks of Love. She plans to donate another 10 inches on May 5, 2007. Emily is five feet tall - 60 inches.
Her fast-growing hair is a blessing for children who have lost their hair because of chemotherapy or other reasons.
Locks of Love takes the hair and makes wigs for children with no hair.
“She donates the hair every other year on May 5, during the Celebration of Cinco de Mayo,” said Gail Motz, Emily’s mother.
Donating the hair on Cinco de Mayo doesn’t have any particular significance to the holiday - which had its origin in Mexico marking the 1862 victory of an outnumbered Mexican army over the French in the Battle of Puebla - except that when Emily donated her first batch while in the fourth grade it fell on May 5, during the Cinco de Mayo celebration.
Emily graduated from St. Gabriel Consolidated School, Glendale. She has spent most of her summer working at the Cincinnati Art Museum. She will start school at Mount Notre Dame next week. She is the daughter of Michael and Gail Motz, West Chester.
