Window Missing 25 Years From Cemetery Chapel Returned

Published: August 14, 2005

A stained-glass window that disappeared from a cemetery chapel in Dayton 25 years ago has been returned.

Vincent Cerrito, of Dayton, visited the Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum three weeks ago and noticed that its side windows looked exactly like one in the home he bought two years ago.

A Woodland official said a staff member had driven by Cerrito’s house recently and noticed the window. The staff member was trying to determine how to approach him when Cerrito contacted the cemetery.

Cerrito agreed to swap the original for the replica that had replaced it.

Woodland officials said some people believe the window disappeared when it was removed during a restoration project of the 1887 chapel. Others heard that a thief had pried it out of the wall.

The window will be placed in the chapel after minor restoration work. Woodland officials would not give a value for the window.
