Howell family celebrating miracle of son’s first steps

Published: August 14, 2005

Less than six months after a near-fatal car crash, Samuel J. Howell took 25 steps last week.

Now, friends and supporters can join the St. Charles teen on his road to recovery.

Buoyed by recent developments, Howell’s family has created a Web site that tracks his progress.

The site miracleboy.myblogsite.com/blog features photos of Howell and daily updates on his recovery.

Last Sunday, Howell took in the Tom Cruise sci-fi flick “War of the Worlds” at an Ann Arbor theater. His next goal is to swallow chocolate pudding, said his sister, Heather Boyes, 30.

The 19-year-old Howell continues to improve since he was seriously injured in a Valentine’s Day crash on M-52 in Swan Creek Township.

He was headed back to the home of his parents, former state Rep. Jim Howell and Maureen Howell, from Michigan State University when he dozed off behind the wheel.

The Howells are remodeling their St. Charles abode to accommodate their son, who could begin in-house rehab in October. Young Howell continues to undergo acute rehabilitation therapy at Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital near Ann Arbor.

The sisters — Boyes and 31-year-old Becca Wolf — created the site in response to frequents requests for information.

Boyes teaches at the Freeland Learning Center. Wolf teaches in the Lansing School District.

The site has had more than 800 hits in four days, Boyes said.

“We want everybody to continue to keep their prayers up,” she added.

“It’s a miracle that he’s still alive, but there are going to be (other miracles).”
