Man rescued from blaze

A YOUNG man sleeping on the sofa in the living room was rescued from his smoke-filled home.
A passer-by who spotted smoke on Tuesday evening last week and heard a smoke detector sounding hammered on the front door but could not get a response so dialled 999.
Firefighters from Baldock and Hitchin dashed to Monklands in Letchworth GC and carried the man out to fresh air and a waiting ambulance.
A grill pan and the cooker were alight. There was extensive smoke damage.
Later that evening, firefighters used hosereels and beaters to tackle five hectares of stubble alight off Wallington Road.
