Disabled cyclist robbed; bike company steps in

Published: August 10, 2005

A disabled cyclist from Quebec whose bicycle and possessions were stolen in Saskatoon will soon be on the road again, with help from a bike company.

Maurice Bernier’s trip across Canada was sidelined last week when his specially equipped bike was stolen outside a restaurant.

Bernier’s supplies and personal belongings were also taken.

The Quebec City man suffers from a form of myopathy, a neuromuscular disease that leaves him weak.

He says shortly after his bike was stolen, a woman pushed him to the ground and stole the money in his wallet. He didn’t know what he would do after that and spent days at a Salvation Army residence.

But on Monday, his luck started to turn around when a Montreal cycle company donated a new bike.

People in Saskatoon, Winnipeg, British Columbia and even a triathletes’ group in Cincinnati, Ohio, have also been phoning to offer help.

“That’s good. I feel better,” he said, crediting “lots of generous people.”

Bernier plans to leave Saskatoon in the next few days after getting new clothes and more supplies.

He plans to cycle to Yellowknife next, then head down through British Columbia.
