Tattoo to cut down skin cancer
Published: August 9, 2005
A group of Wellington school girls have launched a project aimed at reducing skin cancer.
Their invention is a stick on tattoo, called the Tat2riffic, that looks like a bar code and it’s secret ingredients let you know when to slip slop slap.
The designers have targeted the tattoo at young children, who need to learn how to protect themselves from the sun.
It does that by turning purple when it is exposed to ultra violet light, when those rays are blocked it is translucent.
“Our product encourages the use of sunscreen… and when to reapply sunscreen so you don’t get burnt and it can help prevent skin cancer,” says one of the products designers.
The Tat2riffic was officially launched at parliament and the 16-year-old inventors hope their idea will stick
They’re hoping that pharmacies, souvenir shops and gift shops will buy the product.
A pack of five will cost around $5 and with 200,000 New Zealanders dying every year from skin cancer it is money the inventors say is well spent.
