Charity helps kids get new school clothes

Published: August 9, 2005

More than 100 children will shop for new school clothes today with the help of the Salvation Army’s Operation Back 2 School, an annual shopping spree program that uses private and corporate donations to give kids clothes, school supplies and a meal.

Volunteer chaperones will help children select $125 worth of clothes from J.C. Penney in Meadowood Mall. Penney’s will give a 20 percent discount on the clothes.

Children signed up in July through the Salvation Army’s social services department.

“(The kids) know what peer pressure is like,” Community Relations Director Carole Miller said. “If you don’t have clothes that look OK, it’s tough on them. We’re glad we can do this.”

Participants must meet income guidelines, be Washoe County residents and have identification.

The shopping spree program used to be in December, but Miller said the program was shifted to August three years ago because there was less competition for funding and provided children clothes for new school year.
