100 Trafficked children rescued

Published 6 Aug. 2005

MORE than 100 Bangladeshi children trafficked for camel racing in the United Arab Emirates will soon be repatriated.

Emirates police rescued the children, who are favoured as jockeys because of their low bodyweight.

A team, funded in part by UNICEF, will take the children home.

Child rights groups said about 7000 Bangladeshi children were trafficked each year. They were usually kidnapped by traffickers, but some were sold by impoverished parents.

Many end up as jockeys in the Gulf states where camel racing is hugely popular.
