“Loo with a View” : World’s Highest Toilet Built
Published: August 5, 2005
The construction of Australia’s highest toilet will make scaling the country’s highest mountain a more civilized climb.
The all-weather toilet - dubbed the “Loo with a View” - will be built 390 feet below a snowcapped peak of Mount Kosciuszko in a New South Wales state national park.
“The engineering challenges are in trying to build something in such a remote location and at that elevation,” National Parks and Wildlife Service alpine area manager Andrew Harrigan said Thursday.
The toilet will be able to withstand 93 mph winds and will be carved 20 feet into the mountain, Harrigan said, describing it as “a bunker.”
It will include three urinals and three unisex stalls - one with wheelchair access, he said.
The toilet will be able to catch its own water and the septic tank will be big enough to ensure that the toilet can last more than six months without service - since it will be snowed in during the winter.
It’s all part of a push to stop walkers and campers from digging latrines in the earth or snow.
