Breakthrough for ME sufferers

Published: August 5, 2005

Medical experts have uncovered evidence that for the first time suggests Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - or ME - is an illness that is not “all in the mind”.

It will be welcome news to CFS sufferers whose symptoms of acute fatigue, headaches, disrupted sleep patterns and an inability to think clearly are often dismissed as being psychological rather than physical.

A group of British researchers found abnormalities in the white blood cells of those who suffer from the illness.

The breakthrough could lead not only to a blood test for the condition but possibly a drug to treat it.

“We have shown that a significant part of the pathogenesis resides in the white blood cells and in their activity,” team leader Jonathan Kerr said.

“It will open the door to development of pharmacological interventions,” he added.
