Brave cops emerge as heroes after Mumbai rains

Published: August 5, 2005

As the rain eases in Mumbai and the city slowly limps back to normalcy, one family is grieving for their brave son.

Pradeep Nimwalkar was rushing back home in the torrential rainfall when he decided to rescue people being swept away in the floods. He, however, didn’t live to tell the story.

Eyewitnesses and those whose lives he saved said that 28-year-old Nimwalkar, a constable with the Mumbai police, saw several people being carried away with the gushing flood water.

“He just grabbed my collar and saved me and then went in again to get more people out,” said an eyewitness.

Little solace

But this applause brings little solace to his parents who still can’t believe that they’ve lost their only son.

Pradeep’s father Sitaram Nimwalkar had retired just a couple of years ago after serving in the police force for 38 years and no one was more proud when his son followed in his footsteps.

“He always wanted to do something big. He always told me that I had wasted my life and he was going to do something really big one day,” said Nimwalkar

Call of duty

There are others like Pradeep, who battled with nature’s fury at their homes but went beyond the call of duty to save lives.

Tushar Kadam is with the Special Branch and normally he is in plain clothes on duty.

But on that fateful Tuesday when things seemed to be getting out of control, Tushar rushed home wore his uniform and just dived in to save lives.

“Now when I think about it, it is scary. But then there was no time to think. I just did what I had to,” said Tushar.

Mumbai city is full of stories about real life heroes and Pradeep and Tushar are just two of them.
