Tipsy canoeists rescued after hour of treading water
Published: August 3, 2005
RCMP plucked two boaters off a northern Alberta lake after they were forced to tread water for an hour when their canoe tipped.
Mounties say alcohol was a factor in the Sunday night mishap at Edith Lake, near Swan Hills, 217 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
A man and a woman had been in the middle of the lake around 7 p.m. when their canoe went over, dropping both into the water, Mounties said.
A person on shore noticed the struggling pair and called RCMP. Mounties called in a man with a boat and went out to rescue the couple.
The twosome were stranded in the water before they were brought to safety, police said. They were treated for hypothermia and fatigue before being released. Neither was taken to hospital.
Both people were wearing life-jackets.
Mounties said anyone going boating should have safety equipment, such as life-jackets and buckets for bailing, and they warned boaters not to drink and boat.
