Hair salon offers free haircuts to needy kids

Published: August 2, 2005

A local Carolina salon chain hopes to boost the confidence of kids in need before they head back to school.

The Hair Cuttery is offering free haircuts to kids and teens whose families can’t afford a professional back-to-school haircut.

Every time a child age 18 or under gets a haircut they have the opportunity to donate a cut to another child in the community.

The program runs from August 1 – 15.

In 1999, Hair Cuttery introduced its
Share A Haircut program as a way to give back to the community by doing what it does best - cutting hair. Each year, the company partners with social service agencies and nonprofit organizations to donate free haircuts to underprivileged children.

Children up to age 18 can purchase a back-to-school haircut from any Hair Cuttery between August 1 - 15. The company will then match each purchased haircut during the two-week campaign with a free one to a child served by social service agencies or nonprofit organizations in the same community.

Since 1999, the Share A Haircut program has benefited more than 255,000 underprivileged children, and has donated haircuts valued at a total of $2.5 million. Last year alone, the
Share A Haircut program provided gift certificates to 50,000 children across the United States, and as many as 32% of children below the poverty level in markets such as Washington, DC. The company’s goal for 2005 is to top last year by donating 55,000 haircuts - a contribution valued at $550,000.

All 800+ Hair Cuttery salons participate in Share A Haircut.
