Teen being hailed hero for alerting residents of apartment fire

Published: August 1, 2005

A 15-year old boy is credited with getting several families out of a burning apartment building Sunday morning.

Chris Bryant was just spending the night at a friend’s apartment when the teenager smelled smoke and jumped into action.

Fire officials tell Eyewitness News the fire started about 6:30am Sunday at a bottom apartment at the Summer Stone apartments on Dairy View at Bissonnet in west Houston. Within minutes, the blaze spread to the second floor and into the attic.

By then, the fire was out of control. Firefighters called for a second alarm and more manpower. Chris says he was asleep when he smelled smoke and then saw the flames rushing up the balcony.

“It was hot and all you could see is those big flames and I was worried and I had to get everybody out of the house,” said Bryant.

He says he just started alerting nearby residents of the blaze.

Remarkably, no one was injured. Everyone managed to escape the flames.

In all, four apartments were completely destroyed. Four more sustained water and smoke damage. Investigators say the cause of the fire is accidental, beginning when a smoldering BBQ pit on a first floor patio re-ignited.
