Battling cancer with real style

Published: August 1, 2005

Sharon Meier-Tamules couldn’t prevent her younger sister from dying of cancer on Christmas Eve. But she has two tools to help other cancer patients: scissors and walking shoes.

The Orlando-based salon and spa consultant was one of eight hair stylists, nail technician and support staff workers who volunteered their time and talent Sunday in Fort Myers. Their goal was to raise money to participate in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation’s 60-mile benefit walk in Tampa this fall.

Meier-Tamules must raise $2,100 to join the three-day event. She expected the four-hour, Fort Myers cut-a-thon to bring in about $800. Three sisters also are raising money to walk in honor of their late sibling, Kathyleen Divona.

“It’s something that’s close to our hearts, unfortunately,” Meier-Tamules said.

KdK Hair Renovation owner Kristi Hyde, who is a client of Meier-Tamules, offered to host the benefit at her Colonial Boulevard salon.

“Every day we have someone sitting in our chair who’s had cancer or had a friend or family member who had cancer,” Hyde said.

Women’s cuts at the salon normally start at $40, but all were $15 Sunday. Petite manicures were $5.

Sunday’s volunteers came from several Fort Myers salons.

“The hair-cutting community has come together” to support this, Meier-Tamules said.

So did customer Mary Eagan, 46. The Fort Myers woman came to help the cause not just with her money but also with her hair.

She had about 10 inches snipped to donate to Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to needy children with long-term medical hair loss.

This was Eagan’s second hair donation. She spent almost two years growing her black locks back so she could donate again.

“It’s a good cause. It helps the kids out,” she said.
