Published: July 30, 2005
A brave teenager helped to save the life of a woman after she fell into the River Severn from Victoria Quay in Shrewsbury in the early hours of today.
The woman was walking along a path with a friend near Cafe Uno on the quay at about 12.30am when she stumbled and fell into the water.
An 18-year-old man who was passing by jumped into the water to help the woman to the riverbank. The teenager, who has not been named, helped to support the woman and stayed in the water to reassure her.
Water specialists from Shropshire Fire and Rescue’s boat went into the River Severn to rescue the woman, although the boat itself was not needed.
The woman, who is believed to be in her 20s, had back injuries from the fall and was also suffering from the effects of the cold water.
An ambulance crew treated the woman at the scene and she was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
Sergeant Ian Roberts, of Shrewsbury police, a letter of appreciation would be sent to the teenager from the police.
