Carolina Eye First to Use New Intraocular Lens
Published: July 30, 2005
A revolutionary advance in cataract surgery was just introduced by the surgeons at Carolina Eye Associates.
The ReSTOR lens implant is the first and only implant for cataract patients that offers a full range of vision (near, intermediate and distance) utilizing apodized diffractive technology. The implant from Alcon Inc. greatly reduces reliance on eyeglasses.
In clinical trials, 80 percent of patients reported “never” wearing reading glasses or bifocals following bilateral cataract surgery.
There are almost three million cataract surgeries performed each year. Patients who undergo cataract surgery get lens implants to help them focus. Until now, almost all of these implants were single distance vision lenses, which meant they focus at only one distance, requiring patients to wear eyeglasses to see at all distances.
“With the new lens implant, patients now have the potential to focus on the newspaper, the television or road signs, and everything in between, thus reducing their reliance on glasses,” said Dr. Robert Gale Martin, founder of Carolina Eye. “This new lens is a breakthrough in cataract surgery that we are proud to be the first to offer the community. Plus, it also is a great lens for those patients who are not good candidates for LASIK vision correction.”
The lens implant is a tiny, foldable lens and represents breakthrough technology because of its unique optic design, which allows patients to experience the highest level of freedom from glasses ever achieved in clinical trials. The lens uses a combination of three technologies: apodization, diffraction and refraction, to allow patients to experience a full range of vision.
The lens received approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in March. Clinical trials were conducted in the United States and Europe to establish the safety and effectiveness of the lens.
Carolina Eye Associates is one of the largest medical and surgical eye practices in the state. Their Pinehurst/Southern Pines center was one of the first freestanding outpatient eye surgery centers in the United States to be accredited by Medicare.
