Neighbours save toddler from fire

Published: July 28, 2005

A TODDLER escaped a blaze with minor injuries after quick-thinking neighbours came to the rescue.

They plucked a two-year-old boy from the first floor window of his home after seeing smoke pouring from the house in Downe Close, Welling, last Friday.

They also helped a woman to safety from the ground floor of the same house before firefighters tackled the blaze which broke out at 11.33pm.

Both the woman and the toddler were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

The fire, believed to have started in the kitchen, destroyed a quarter of the ground floor.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “In London, more than a third of accidental fires in the home start in the kitchen - and nearly all involve the cooker.
