Four babies were rescued on Thursday morning from a house that caught fire in Booysens, south of Johannesburg, emergency services said.
Spokesperson Malcolm Midgley said the babies were taken to South Rand hospital where they were being treated for smoke inhalation.
The house, which had been home to “four or five families”, caught fire at about 6am.
Midgley said the children had been sleeping in one room when the fire broke out.
When emergency services arrived the scene, all the adults were outside.
