Teens feel good about donations
Published: July 27, 2005
For the past several years, teenagers from all over the United States have been cutting their hair and donating it to Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children who are suffering from long-term medical hair loss.
Ali Moody, 13, of Freehold Township, donated her hair to Locks of Love for a second time on June 18. When she was 10, Ali cut off 10 inches of hair and donated it to Locks of Love. Three years later she donated 11.5 inches of hair to the charity.
“It felt really good to donate to such a good cause,” Ali said. “If more people did this, they would feel a lot better about themselves.”
Ali said she is planning to grow her hair long again and donate it for a third time.
Hilary Karpoff, 16, of Marlboro, started growing out her hair during her freshman year in high school. As her sophomore year came to an end, Hilary had enough hair to donate to Locks of Love. She was eager to cut off 10 inches of her hair for charity.
“It’s such an amazing charity,” the teenager said. “Everyone always tells me how much they love my hair, and I figured I could make someone else really happy who needed it a lot more than I do.”
Hilary said she got a feeling of satisfaction from making the donation. She is planning to start the process all over again and donate more hair next year.
“It was really scary to lose all of that hair at once, but when it was all gone, it was so liberating and incredible. I felt so good about myself right away,” she said.
