Florida names its teacher of the year

A Winter Haven educator was named Florida’s teacher of the year Tuesday night, besting four other finalists, including a music teacher and band director from Carol City Senior High.
Samuel Bennett received a $10,000 prize, plus a crystal trophy. His school, Garner Elementary, also received $1,000.
The South Florida contender, Fedrick Ingram, was Miami-Dade’s first finalist since 1999, when Stephanie King of Design and Architecture Senior High won the award.

Chicken Soup for the Soul Celebrates Teachers (Chicken Soup for the Soul)The last Broward finalist was Jane Koszoru from the College Academy at Broward Community College in Davie in 2003, and Broward’s last winner was Henry Brown III in 2002.
The other finalists this year were: Daniel Snyder from Fernandina Beach High School in Fernandina Beach; Kathy Corder from Lawton Chiles High School in Tallahassee; and Kathy Kriedler from Taylor County Elementary School in Perry.
The statewide contest was sponsored by Macy’s department store.
