Sailor rescued for a second time in one month
Published: July 26, 2005
A woman who was rescued earlier this month after spending nine hours in the water off the B.C. coast has had to be rescued for a second time.
Vancouver coast guards got a call about 5 p.m. Sunday after Ivana Slovarich’s boat Benedicte, began taking water and listing near Gabriola, B.C.
Coast guards towed the Benedicte back to shore and an inspection of the vessel showed the keel was missing.
The Benedicte is the same sailboat in which Slovarich said she fell from July 13 when a wave hit the vessel. She said that incident happened in the early morning hours after two male companions on the vessel had gone to sleep.
Police have now advised Slovarich and her skipper to avoid sailing for a while.
“I’ve told them both that things happen in threes and they should both stick to land for a little bit,” Cpl. Carl Vinet of Gabriola Island RCMP told CTV News.
Slovarich made headlines two weeks ago when she fell off the Benedicte and floated 24 kilometres across Georgia Strait, near Vancouver.
The 40-year-old woman says a seal kept her company throughout her traumatic experience, until she was finally rescued.
The first time, she was pulled from the waters near Valdes Island, one of the Gulf Islands between the B.C. mainland and Vancouver Island, after being spotted by a passing sailboat.
