Junior Achievement of Siouxland presented its first Teacher of the Year Award to Christine Carothers; high school economics teacher at South Sioux City High School, and its first Volunteer of the Year Award to Dr. David Ray, owner of Perry Creek Animal Hospital.
The Teacher of the Year and Volunteer of the Year awards were established to recognize educators and classroom volunteers who go above and beyond to teach students about economics, business and free enterprise using Junior Achievement programs.
“The success of JA programs depends upon a special partnership between the classroom teacher and business volunteer,” said Rebecca Meyer, president of Junior Achievement of Siouxland Inc.
“Christine Carothers goes above and beyond to make JA volunteers and other visitors in her classroom feel welcome, comfortable and appreciated,” Meyer stated. She added, “Mrs. Carothers teaches her students that economics is more than just theory; it’s a way of thinking that will help them understand and evaluate their future decisions.

Good Will Hunting“Dr. Ray has shared his professional and entrepreneurial experience with children at Clark Elementary School, Hoover Middle School and North Middle School as a program volunteer for JA,” Meyer stated. She added, “Most recently, Dr. Ray taught personal economics classes for seventh graders at North Middle School. As a personal economics volunteer, Dr. Ray helped students assess their personal skills and interests, explore career options, learn job-seeking skills and practice personal and family financial management.
“For several years,” Meyer continued, “Dr. Ray has hosted job shadow day for middle school students at his clinic. Many youngsters have had a chance to catch a glimpse of their futures because of Dr. Ray’s dedication to preparing the next generation to enter the world of work.”
Junior Achievement is the world’s largest and fastest growing organization dedicated to educating young people about business, economics and free enterprise.
