Teens save 11-year-old boy’s life

Published: July 22, 2005

Quick-thinking teenagers have been hailed as heroes after saving the life of a youngster who had accidentally hanged himself while playing on a rope swing.

Jack Pond was playing close to his home on the Millennium Green in Shefford when the rope became tangled round his neck.

Jermayne Vincent of The Avenue, Stotfold, Alex Russell of Clifton Road, Shefford, and Lewis Claxton of Walton Close, Shefford raced to help the stricken youngster after hearing his younger brother’s cries for help.

Lewis, 14, said: “At the time it was scary. His lips were all blue and his tongue was sticking out, his face was all pale. He looked like he was dead.”

Alex, 15, supported Jack’s body while the others removed the rope from his neck and laid him on a bench.

Jermayne, who was taught first aid on a Prince’s Trust course, then placed Jack in the recovery position until help arrived.

Jack was rushed to Lister Hospital, Stevenage where he was placed on a life support machine.

But after what paramedics described as a ‘remarkable recovery’ he was allowed home after two days, and was reunited with his trio of rescuers on Wednesday.

Lewis added: “His dad said without a doubt he would have died without us and that makes me feel really good.”
