Child returned safely after Amber Alert

Middletown police called off yesterday’s Amber Alert when the abductor, the child’s father, called to say he was returning the baby.
Shortly before noon yesterday, a woman pulled up to the home of her relatives at 13 Liberty St. in Middletown with her two young children.
Just then, the woman’s estranged husband, Michael Matza, 27, of Bloomingburg, pulled in front of her and jumped out of his car, in violation of a court order to stay away from her, Police Lt. Paul Rickard said.
Matza reached for his daughter, 4, but his wife’s mother held onto the girl. Then Matza took his 1-year-old son and drove off as his wife called 911.
Matza’s wife also filed a complaint Wednesday night, saying he had violated the court order, police said. Overnight and yesterday morning, Matza called his mother and his wife and said he planned to kill himself.
Believing the child’s life was in danger, Middletown police set up an Amber Alert.
But then Matza called police and told Detective George Booth that he would drop the child off at the boy’s aunt’s home in Plattekill, which he did, Rickard said.
Matza also told police he would turn himself in, but he hadn’t by yesterday evening.
