9-year-old saves his sister from a big electrical jolt
Published: July 21, 2005
Andrew Davison, 9, thought a snake was attacking his sister. But the hazard he saved her from Wednesday was far more dangerous than a garden reptile.
Running through the green extension cord Andrew pulled from 13-year-old Samantha’s hand was an electric current that could have caused serious injuries, said Punta Gorda Fire Department Capt. Ray Briggs.
“She screamed, ‘It’s got me,’” Andrew said. “She got thrown back three or four feet.”
Samantha received an electric shock when she picked up a cord that was running from the pool patio of her home on Arapahoe Circle to the outside dock, said her mother, Rosemary Davison.
Samantha got out of the pool to close the lanai door, her mother said. The extension cord the Davisons set up the day before to charge a boat battery was in the way. The section of the cord stuck in the door all night was nicked down to the wire.
“She shouted, ‘I can’t get it off me,’ which I thought was a bug,” Rosemary Davison said. “Because she was jumping around that much, I thought something was stinging her.”
Andrew jumped out of the pool and ran to her, his mother said. “It was a gut reaction.”
Within four seconds, Andrew grabbed the wire from Samantha, receiving only a slight shock himself, he said.
The rescue left Andrew’s whole arm shaking, he said. Samantha fared worse, receiving several blisters. She felt hot on her hands and body, Andrew added.
“I hope she’s OK,” said Andrew after an ambulance took his sister to Peace River Regional Medical Center in the early afternoon. “Wow, I didn’t know I was going to be a hero.”
Samantha spent several hours at the hospital while doctors monitored her heart, her mother said. The tests showed she’s fine.
“He saved her really, I suppose,” she said. “Really, it could have been pretty horrendous. The doctor said she was lucky. She was really, really lucky.”
