Giving teacher’s time to receive

Published: July 12, 2005

EVERYONE has skills and it’s important to contribute to the community.

That belief led teacher Lynette Tung to teaching classes at Southern Grampians Adult Education - and her selection as employee of the year at the Southern Grampians Business Achievement Awards.

Ms Tung moved to Hamilton about three-and-a-half years ago and approached Southern Grampians Adult Education, wondering if her skills as an English-as-a-second-language teacher were in demand.

It turned out they were and Ms Tung began volunteering her tutoring skills two days a week.

“At the moment I deal with adults but in the past I worked with high school students. It’s about giving them the confidence to handle day-to-day tasks,” she said.

She said the classes were about learning to read, write and better communicate but also about building social networks.

Ms Tung said she was offered a salary for her work but preferred to volunteer her services.

“A lot of people within the community volunteer,” she said.

“Obviously I’m very touched and very happy I’ve been honoured with the award.

“I just feel if you have a talent whatever it is you should contribute that to the community.”
