Home At last - A Dog With 9 Lives

Published: July 7, 2005

A man and his dog have been reunited after eight months. The dog went missing from its home in Honeoye Falls and mysteriously showed up in Rochester.

The dog’s owner, David Outerbridge, said, “My feeling was somebody had stolen the dog directly from the premises.”

He immediately searched his neighborhood when he found out she was missing.

He said, “This poor animal could be in Massachusetts by the time they look around here.”

Scooter was a lot closer than Massachusetts. Police officers found her walking along Otis and Sherman Streets in Rochester, about 30 miles from Honeoye Falls.

Outerbridge said, “Officers Collins and Nefler from Jay Street Precinct called me at quarter of five and said they had my dog. I thought it was a joke.”

But no, Scooter was wearing her dog tag and the officers identified her.

Outerbridge picked her up at Animal Services. After hearing Scooter’s story, they implanted her with an electronic microchip.

Director of Animal Services Chris Fitzgerald said, “If a pet shows up at an animal shelter or veterinary hospital, it is scanned by personnel. They come up with a number and the number is called into a national data base.”

No one but Scooter knows how she traveled from Honeoye Falls to Rochester. Her owner said she’s cute, funny and protective. Perhaps her protective instinct helped her survive her ordeal.
