Bystander Rescues Boy Trapped On Rock
Published: June 29, 2005
A bystander rescued a boy stuck on a rock in southwest Baltimore’s Gwynns Falls Tuesday afternoon, but a teenager possibly remains missing.
A young man saw the children stranded in the river and jumped across fast-moving water to rescue a boy from the rock, as a girl looked on from another rock, all before rescuers could arrive, reported television station WBAL.
The man, whose identity was not immediately known, picked up the boy and jumped across the water again. Both children were wearing bathing suits. It’s unclear as to how they got stuck on the rocks.
The girl was also rescued, but authorities continue to search for a 17-year-old reported missing in the Gwynns Falls, WBAL reported. Authorities do not know whether that person remains trapped in the fast-moving waters, or whether they returned home safely.
“Around 4:20 this afternoon, we received a call reporting children in the water. The development was that four kids were swimming the Gwynns Falls, one was taken by the current and has not been rescued at this time,” Baltimore City Fire Department spokesman Kevin Cartwright said.
Fire crews inflated rafts at both sides of the Gwynns Falls and called upon Baltimore Police to search from the air.
WBAL reported that authorities established a command post and crews were combing the shorelines trying to find the 17-year-old.
The two children rescued from the rocks did not appear to be injured.
