That’s Not a Cat Up the Tree, It’s a Bear!

Published: June 28, 2005

On Monday morning, Charissa Ingle of Beebe, Arkansas, found more than a cat up her tree. She explains, “I couldn’t get the dogs inside to quit barking. So, I told my daughter to go outside to see what was going on. She come back in and said there was a bear in the tree.”

The 175 pound black bear made its way to town and has been in the tree for several hours. Curious bear watchers come out to get a peek at the two-year old cub. It’s the second time he’s made his way to the area. His first visit was two weeks ago.

Danny Denney Arkansas with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) says, “We caught it in Searcy, released at Robinwood in Wattinsas and White River. I guess he was on his way back home.”

The AGFC does what it can to get the bear to come down, but to no avail he climbs higher. Using a tranquilizer gun, wildlife officers shoot the cub.

Slowly, and at his own pace, the cub falls down. Denney says, “A lot of times they’ll stay where they’re at. But sometimes like him, he’s been agitated all morning. So, he was going higher in the tree.”

Luckily, the cub is okay and will be released farther out, possibly to the Ouachita Mountains. Until then, this bear of a tale is over for now.
