Endangered Turtles To Be Returned To Sea

Published: June 27, 2005

Aquarium staffers will return two endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtles to the sea on Tuesday after months of rehabilitation in New Orleans.

The turtles stayed too long in chilly waters off New England and were cold-stunned when rescued there and sent to the Audubon Aquarium in March, according to aquarium spokeswoman Melissa Lee.

She said they will be weighed and measured at the aquarium before they’re trucked to the Coast Guard station in Venice and put onto a boat so they can be released farther out in the Gulf of Mexico.

More Kemp’s ridley turtles and an unusual cross between a hawksbill and a green turtle will be released later in the summer.

Aquarium curators said they had never seen such a hybrid before, but had heard of them, Lee said.

The hybrid turtle is on display in the aquarium’s Caribbean exhibit until it is released later this summer.
