Two Rescued From Collapsed House

Published: June 25, 2005

An amazing rescue was performed by the Atlanta Fire Department Saturday afternoon after a house collapsed on six construction workers. Workers were renovating a house on Randolph Street when its roof caved in.

Four of the workers were able to escape on their own. The remaining two workers became entangled in the debris and were trapped.

The Atlanta Fire Department arrived on the scene along with several local agencies. Before they could rescue the two trapped victims, they had to do some remodeling themselves.

“What they did was shore the building up where the interior walls had fallen. The supports were used to hold the ceiling, roof up. That way there wouldn’t be any further collapse,” said Deputy Chief Willis of the Atlanta Fire Department.

Two of the victims were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital to be treated for injuries. One of the victims had several broken bones.

Authorities said that a section of Randolph Street near Irwin will be shut down for several hours. They want to be sure the house does not shift further, causing more damage.
