Dog fetches bomb from river

Published: June 25, 2005

Brookings police got an unexpected and slightly unwanted surprise Thursday when a citizen delivered an unexploded pipe bomb to their station.

According to Lieutenant John Bishop, a citizen playing fetch with their dog at the AtRiver’s Edge Resort also got a surprise when the dog pulled the bomb from the river. The citizen took it from the dog and delivered it to the police station.

Brookings Police secured the bomb with sandbags in the parking lot behind city hall. The bomb squad from Coos County was summoned and the bomb was detonated at 11:21 p.m.

While police appreciated the citizen’s help with the bomb, they stressed caution when dealing with unexploded bombs.

“It’s just dangerous for any citizen who finds anything like that to put it in their car because they don’t know how unstable it is,” Bishop said. “We just want people to know, if they find stuff like this to leave it alone.”

Call the police department, but don’t touch it, Bishop added.

The bomb was constructed from white PVC pipe and was 6 to 8 inches in length.
