Firefighter Rescues Man in Wheelchair
Published: June 24, 2005
A paraplegic man was lucky to be alive on Thursday after being trapped inside his burning home.
Thanks to the home’s wheelchair accessibility and the bravery of local firefighters, David Fisher was saved.
For Fisher, it was difficult to leave his burning home.
In his mind, he thought he should stay inside and put out the fire.
Ryan O’Hearn, heroic fireman, said, “We knew when we pulled up that our primary goal was to find and remove him from the house, before we worried about the fire.”
When they found him, he was in a hallway, trying to put out the fire with a glass of water.
But a glass of water wasn’t enough to extinguish the fire, and his wife wasn’t strong enough to rescue him.
Wilma Fisher, David’s wife, said, “He was too heavy. I was in panic mode. The firemen came and got him.”
They got him and his wheelchair through the wide hallways and down the custom-made wheelchair ramps.
O’Hearn said, “We didn’t have to pick him up and down any stairs, and we were able to get him to the ambulance pretty quickly.”
Wilma said, “He would have died. I don’t think it would have been much longer. They saved his life.”
And though he was rescued, his belongings were not. Among his favorite were his model airplanes.
Bret Dover, David’s son-in-law, said, “He is most upset about his airplanes, his models. He’s very concerned about those.”
Wilma said, “It made him really sad. Those planes are his life.”
The life he’s lucky to have.
David Fisher’s family says he is recovering from smoke inhalation, but for the most part he is doing fine.
