Dogs to rescue of man stuck in mud

Published: June 23, 2005

A man who jumped into a muddy river to rescue his trapped dog got sucked into the silt himself only to be saved when his dog raced to get help.

In scenes similar to a Lassie adventure, the dog ran off to raise the alarm at some nearby houses after it had wriggled free from the mud on the banks of the River Ver on Saturday.

It is thought that the dog led people back to the scene where his owner had by then been sucked into the mud up to his waist.

Firefighters from Garston, Hatfield, Radlett and St Albans arrived at the scene under the M25 bridge off Smug Oak Lane in Bricket Wood. They used an inflatable rescue path and a spinal board to free the man. A spokesperson for the fire service said: “The crews had to be very careful and move slowly out to the man because on silt there are suction problems.”

An ambulance was called and the man was checked for injuries but was given the all clear.
