School honors volunteer

Published: June 21, 2005

RenĂ©e White, who will be a senior at University High School, was selected Volunteer of the Year at Indianapolis Public Schools’ Brookside Elementary (School 54).

Last month, during the Eastside school’s Awards Day program, Principal Emilee Matthews, two second-grade students and their teacher, Martha Levenson, presented the award to White for her dedication and focus as a volunteer.

During the past two years, White has volunteered many hours working with students and teachers, planning lessons, grading papers, communicating with parents and arranging field trips.

She also provided supplies for some students and mentored many of them.

In addition to her work in the classroom, White spoke with her University classmates about the importance of making a difference and connecting with the young students at the school at 3150 E. 10th St.

Her work helped create a partnership with School 54 that resulted in field trips, special parties, gifts for the students at Christmas and daylong visits by high school students on days when University was not in session.

Although White said she has not yet settled on what she will study after graduating from high school, she expects it will involve education.
