Man Survives Accident

Published: June 21, 2005

It’s been six months since one Midlands mom came close to losing her son in a serious car accident but now, he’s doing much better.

“When I got to the scene, the car was flipped upside down and I got hysterical. I really lost it,” says Algean Isaac.

She will never forget New Year’s Eve 2004. Authorities told Algean, her son, Algeron was speeding and lost control of his car.

“They told me he’s breathing, but he’s unconscious and I said Lord, please let my son live.”

Algeron was airlifted to Palmetto Richland Hospital. He was unconscious for two weeks.

“When we saw him, he had a lot of bruises but they told me they did tests. It wasn’t any broken bones and they let me know that it was the brain that was damaged.”

But she didn’t give up. Everyday she talked to him. Finally, he responded. “He opened his eyes and I was really relieved but he couldn’t talk because of the trach in his throat.”

Algeron went through weeks of rehabilitation. “They gave him physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy and he really started coming back.”

But he couldn’t remember anything about the accident. “I didn’t believe them,” says Algeron. “I didn’t know why I was in the hospital.”

So they showed him a video of the wrecked car. “When I saw the car, they said you’re blessed you made it out of that car,” he says. “I don’t know how I made it out that car. That’s what I thought.”

These days Algeron is back to his old self at 22 years old. He isn’t taking life for granted. He spends more time with family and his little girl, Monasia.

Algeron and his mom say the accident that turned their lives upside down in the end, brought them closer together and that’s a blessing in itself. “He’s my miracle baby and I really love him,” says Algean.
