Dog pulled out of river, reunited with owner

Published: June 21, 2005

A dog owner was reunited with his pet Monday after the yellow Labrador retriever was pulled from the Elizabeth River near downtown.

Gary Melton, a Portsmouth resident, said he picked up Buddy from Norfolk’s animal control shelter Monday afternoon.

“I’m just glad to have him back,” Melton said. The dog had been missing from Melton’s home in West Park View since Monday morning.

An employee of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said someone threw the dog from a boat near the organization’s riverfront headquarters Monday morning.

Laura Brown, who manages domestic animal and wildlife rescue for PETA, said she pulled the dog from the river.

Police took the dog to the animal control facility about 10 a.m., said police spokesman Chris Amos. Amos said police have no information about the boater who allegedly dumped the dog.

Melton said a friend saw a television news story about the situation and alerted him.
