4th Graders Get Disabled Dog Wheelchair
Published: June 21, 2005
Johanna is a mixed breed dog who was abused and paralyzed in Tennessee. Now she lives in Fryeburg and Monday she got a wheelchair to help her get around.
The chair came with the help of a fourth-grade class in Oklahoma. The class raised more than $400 to buy the chair for Johanna.
The 5-year-old dog came to Maine last month and lives with Lauren Smith and her family.
“I thought it wouldn’t be that hard, it’s a little harder than I thought it would be,” said Smith. “We’re getting used to it.”

Dogs 24/7: Extraordinary Photographs Of Wonderful DogsHandicappedpets.com helped Lauren adopt Johanna. Deb Winters works with the group and was thrilled to see Johanna using the chair so well.
“These are very ergonomically designed to keep their spine the way it should be,” she said. “It’s very safe and very user friendly.”
There are eight other dogs in the Smith family, and Lauren thinks the others will be a little confused with the new contraption, but she figures they’ll adjust.
Now, keeping up with Johanna is the challenge.
