Scientists fend off polar bears, caribou to reach telescope

Published: June 20, 2005

Scientists had a beastly time over the weekend trying to get their hands on important data on the origins of the universe.

A powerful telescope with digital recordings taken from high in the atmosphere parachuted down into the Canadian Arctic Saturday. When scientists went to pick it up, they met resistance from the local wildlife.

An official at AMEC Dynamic Structures says “The secret of our universe’s beginnings was being protected by caribou and polar bears.”

He says the scientists had to return with a rifle for protection. They were able to extract the computer and its data from the telescope. It had been launched on a balloon in northern Sweden and floated four days before the Arctic landing.

The official says the company designed the telescope to detect microwaves from billions of years ago that are just now arriving at Earth.
