Miracle escape as 7ft steel girder strikes car
Published: June 18, 2005
A mother and son escaped serious injury when a steel girder from a lorry crashed into their car.
The woman, aged 41, and her 14- year-old son, from Saffron Walden, were at the top of Sparrow Hill driving into Saffron Walden on the Newport Road when the accident occurred at 9.15am on Wednesday.
An ambulance crew was on the scene within five minutes and emergency medical technician John Hammond said: “The seven foot long girder struck the windscreen and door pillar about halfway up on the driver’s side after coming off a lorry going the other way.
“The windscreen shattered, covering the woman and her son with glass. Amazingly they escaped almost completely uninjured - the mum had glass in her hand.
“This must have been a shocking incident and you cannot believe how lucky they are not to have been seriously hurt.”

A spokesman for Essex Police said investigations would take place to see if the lorry driver was carrying an insecure load.
“It seems there was a large piece of metal on the road and we had to get a special vehicle to lift it off,” said the spokesman.
The road was blocked for nearly three hours while all metal and debris was cleared.
