Five-year-old Darragh Somers, who survived a bullet wound to the head, was back home in Fermanagh today after two months in hospital.
His departure from the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children hospital prompted joy from his family and friends and the doctors who treated him.
Darragh was accidentally shot in the head by a stray bullet as he played in the grounds of Mullinaskea Primary School on April 22.
Police have so far been unable to identify the person who pulled the trigger, believing it to have been a hunter who was shooting vermin on nearby fields.
As Darragh left hospital in a wheelchair, his father Gerald said: “At the start we thought he might not make it, but there was another force at work. I cannot understand it.”
David McAuley, the consultant paediatric neurosurgeon who headed the medical team that looked after Darragh, spoke of his delight. He said: “It’s a joy to see him go home today after what was a life-threatening injury from which he could have easily died. “It attests to the skill of a great many people.”
